Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Building Automation Design Engineer to lead the design, development, and implementation of HVAC Building Automation Systems (BAS) for commercial and institutional buildings. This role requires a strong technical design background combined with hands-on field experience, enabling the engineer to bridge the gap between design intent and real-world installation and operation.
The successful candidate will be highly proficient in Niagara Framework-based systems, have working experience with Distech Controls, and be comfortable producing detailed system architecture and control drawings using Microsoft Visio. This role will also support project delivery teams through design reviews, technical guidance, and commissioning support.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
- Develop complete BAS/HVAC controls designs, including system architecture, network layouts, points lists, sequences of operation, and control strategies
- Create and maintain control system drawings, schematics, and network topology diagrams using Microsoft Visio
- Interpret mechanical schedules, specifications, and drawings to produce compliant automation designs
- Lead the development of sequences of operation aligned with energy efficiency, commissioning, and client requirements
- Review and validate control submittals, shop drawings, and as-built documentation
Platform & Technology Expertise
- Design and support systems based on Niagara Framework (N4)
- Configure and integrate Distech Controls hardware and software solutions
- Support system integration with third-party systems (e.g., VFDs, meters, chillers, boilers, lighting, and BMS interfaces)
- Apply industry-standard communication protocols such as BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, Modbus, and related field buses
Field & Project Support
- Apply first-hand field experience to ensure designs are practical, installable, and serviceable
- Provide technical support during installation, commissioning, and handover phases
- Participate in site walks, system troubleshooting, and performance validation as required
- Support commissioning agents and clients by responding to technical queries and design clarifications
Leadership & Collaboration
- Act as a senior technical resource and mentor for junior engineers and designers
- Collaborate closely with project managers, commissioning teams, electricians, and mechanical contractors
- Participate in value engineering, design optimization, and constructability reviews
- Contribute to the development of internal engineering standards and best practices
