Senior Structural Engineer
Senior Structural Engineer - Waukesha OR Greenville, WI
Company Overview
This is an opportunity to join a large, family-owned heavy civil and infrastructure organisation with a strong presence across Wisconsin and the wider Midwest. The business has approximately 3,000 employees across several operating companies, with services spanning heavy civil construction, bridge and infrastructure work, asphalt paving, concrete, curb and gutter, road construction, land moving, solar, manufacturing, quarry operations, and related construction services.
Although the organisation is large and well-established, it has maintained a collaborative, family-oriented culture where people are described as approachable, friendly, and supportive. The company is continuing to grow, with senior leadership planning for further expansion across the continental United States.
Position Overview
The Senior Structural Engineer will join a Wisconsin-based structural engineering team focused primarily on heavy civil infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on bridge-related engineering, road and highway projects, and broader structural design support. The role is best suited to someone who enjoys technical structural engineering, working closely with construction teams, and contributing to projects that have a visible impact on local communities.
This position is primarily office-based, with only limited time spent on project sites. The majority of the work will be performed from the office, with occasional site visits for design review or inspection support. The ideal office location is Waukesha, Wisconsin, with the team expected to move into a central Wauwatosa location next year. The company is also open to considering candidates based from other Wisconsin office locations, including Greenville, for the right person.
This role also offers a strong long-term growth path. The successful candidate will work alongside a team of four structural engineers and will have the opportunity to mentor more junior and mid-level engineers, while growing into a future leadership role over time.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Support the structural engineering and design of heavy civil infrastructure projects, with a focus on bridges, roads, highways, and related construction projects.
- Assess, model, analyse, and design structural systems, with a particular focus on steel structures.
- Work on a range of structural materials, including steel, concrete, and timber, where applicable.
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, construction documents, drawings, and technical design deliverables.
- Collaborate closely with construction, project management, and engineering teams across the wider organisation.
- Provide technical support during project execution, including occasional site visits for design review or inspection-related support.
- Use AutoCAD to support design, drafting, and engineering documentation.
- Contribute to bridge, roadway, highway, and broader heavy civil engineering projects across Wisconsin.
- Provide guidance, mentoring, and technical support to junior and mid-level structural engineers within the team.
- Help support continued growth of the structural engineering function as the organisation expands.
The role is expected to be approximately 95% office-based and around 5% site-based, with most project-related travel taking place within Wisconsin. Some occasional travel to nearby states such as Illinois or Michigan may occur, although this is not expected to be a major part of the role.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Ideally 7+ years of experience in heavy civil structural engineering, bridge engineering, infrastructure, roads, highways, or related project work.
- Candidates with 5+ years of structural engineering experience in other construction verticals will also be considered, provided they are open to transitioning into heavy civil infrastructure.
- Professional Engineer or Structural Engineer licence preferred.
- Candidates who do not yet hold a PE or SE should be actively working towards licensure.
- PE or SE licensure can be from any jurisdiction and does not need to be Wisconsin-specific.
- Strong experience with steel structural design is required.
- Concrete and timber experience would be beneficial but is not a deal breaker.
- AutoCAD experience is required.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with engineering, construction, and project teams.
- Interest in mentoring junior engineers and contributing to the continued development of the team.
The company is open to seeing structural engineers from buildings, vertical construction, bridge, highway, road, or broader construction backgrounds, as long as they have structural engineering experience, steel exposure, and a genuine interest in moving into the heavy civil infrastructure space.
Benefits
- Competitive base salary range of approximately $130,000 to $170,000, depending on experience and seniority.
- Bonus eligibility, expected to be approximately 5-7%.
- 8% profit sharing.
- 3% company contribution into 401(k).
- Premium-free medical plans, with the company covering the full cost for both the employee and their family.
- Relocation support available on a case-by-case basis, potentially up to $10,000.
- Company vehicle available for work-related travel where required.
- Flexible working hours, with employees trusted to manage their time responsibly.
- Long-term career progression into leadership.
- Opportunity to work on some of the largest and most interesting heavy civil and infrastructure projects in Wisconsin.
The role is office-based five days per week, although there is flexibility around working hours. The company values an on-site presence while still treating employees with trust and autonomy around their schedules.
Why Join
This is a strong opportunity for a structural engineer who wants to be part of a stable, growing, family-owned organisation with the resources of a large business and the culture of a collaborative, people-focused team. The company has a strong reputation in Wisconsin's heavy civil construction market and is involved in some of the largest infrastructure projects across the state
For someone coming from a traditional structural design or buildings background, this role offers the chance to transition into heavy civil infrastructure while still applying core structural engineering skills. The company is open-minded on background and is willing to consider engineers from buildings, vertical construction, bridges, roads, highways, or other structural environments, provided they are interested in the heavy civil space.
The benefits package is a major differentiator, particularly the premium-free medical plans for the employee and family, profit sharing, 401(k) contribution, bonus eligibility, and relocation support. This is a role where the full package can be highly competitive beyond base salary alone.
There is also a clear opportunity to step into more of a leadership path over time. The person joining will work with a small structural engineering team and will be expected to share knowledge, mentor others, and contribute to the team's growth without immediately stepping into a formal direct-report management role.
