Substation Designer
Overview
We are seeking a Senior Substation Designer with technical experience in the design of high-voltage (HV) substations supporting electric utilities, renewable energy interconnections, and data center projects. This role supports substation design efforts from conceptual development through final design and involves close coordination with engineers, designers, and cross‑disciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare 3D models and 2D drawing packages for HV substations, including single-line diagrams, substation physical and general arrangements, conduit and cable plans and details, grounding grid plans and details, lightning protection and yard lighting plans, and bills of materials.
- Lead, coach, and mentor junior designers and CAD technicians to support high‑quality and on‑time project delivery.
- Coordinate with engineering and other disciplines to ensure fully integrated and constructible designs.
- Incorporate engineering direction, client comments, and design changes into drawing and model packages.
- Interpret and apply applicable design codes, standards, and client specifications related to substation design.
- Adhere to project, client, and internal drafting and design standards.
- Execute revisions, redlines, and markups accurately and efficiently.
- Organize, track, and maintain all drawing revisions and project documentation in a clear and structured manner.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in drafting, design technology, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in physical substation design.
- Proven experience designing 15kV through 345kV utility substations.
- Working knowledge of IEEE and ANSI standards applicable to HV substations.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
- Strong understanding of substation physical layouts, clearances, and constructability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with BIM or substation-specific design tools such as Inventor, SDS‑P4A, or Primtech.
- Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design and modeling software.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary design environments.
