Transmission System Operator
Position Overview
A leading utility provider is seeking qualified candidates to fill Transmission System Operator positions across Associate, Mid-Level, and Senior tiers. These roles are critical in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System (BES) during both normal and emergency conditions. Position level will be determined based on the candidate's education, experience, and technical capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
All Levels:
Monitor bulk electric system status and respond to operational changes or emergencies.
Make necessary internal and external notifications during system disturbances.
Manage voltage and reactive power flows to meet voltage schedules.
Prepare and execute switching orders to ensure safety for field work.
Issue verbal instructions to field crews and communicate with external stakeholders.
Control transmission and distribution equipment through SCADA systems.
Coordinate power flow with interconnected systems.
Maintain accurate logs of system activity for reporting purposes.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Transmission System Operator:
Authorized to take timely, independent real-time actions to maintain BES reliability, including firm load shedding.
Operate under the authority of applicable regional entities (e.g., RC, TOP, BA).
Execute critical reliability tasks without needing further internal approval.
Maintain valid certifications from NERC and regional transmission authorities.
Stay current on operational practices and procedures.
Senior Transmission System Operator:
Lead updates and revisions to operational procedures and best practices.
Assist in training and mentoring of junior operators.
Complete advanced task verifications as part of continued qualification.
Qualifications
Education Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline preferred.
Associate degree in a technical field plus 2+ years relevant experience, or
High school diploma plus 4+ years of relevant experience.
Experience Requirements:
Associate Level: 0-3 years of experience in electrical or mechanical systems in utility, industrial, or production settings.
Mid-Level: 3+ years, with at least 18 months in a system operator or similar role.
Senior Level: 5+ years total, with 3+ years in a system operator role.
Certification Requirements:
Associate Level: Must obtain NERC and regional transmission certifications within 6 months of hire.
Mid-Level: Same as above; current certification preferred.
Senior Level: Must currently hold NERC certification; must obtain regional certification within 3 months of hire.
Desired Skills and Competencies
Proficiency in computer tools such as EMS, DMS, SCADA, Microsoft Office.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in high-pressure environments.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
High attention to detail and ability to follow safety protocols.
Ethical, reliable, and adaptable with strong situational awareness.
Additional Requirements
Must be able to operate company-assigned or personal vehicle for job duties.
Will be expected to respond to emergency events and storms.
Ability to report to the assigned facility within 90 minutes during emergency call-ins.
Completion of internal operator qualification programs is required by role level.
