Associate Acoustic Consultant

Position Summary

A growing acoustical consulting firm is seeking an Associate Acoustic Consultant to join its team. This role is ideal for an acoustical professional who can independently perform field measurements, analyze acoustic and vibration data, and provide practical design recommendations across a wide range of projects.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working directly with clients, conducting site visits, and translating technical findings into clear, actionable recommendations. This position offers a blend of field work, technical analysis, consulting, and design review responsibilities.

The role may offer a hybrid work schedule and will include regular travel for site visits throughout California.

Key Responsibilities

Field Measurements & Testing

  • Independently perform acoustical and vibration measurements in occupied and new-construction environments.
  • Conduct:
    • STC (Sound Transmission Class) testing
    • IIC (Impact Insulation Class) testing
    • Reverberation time measurements
    • Environmental noise monitoring
    • Long-term sound measurements
    • Vibration assessments and troubleshooting
  • Travel to project sites to perform field investigations and document findings.
  • Operate and maintain measurement equipment while ensuring testing is conducted in accordance with applicable industry standards.

Analysis & Consulting

  • Analyze measurement data and develop technical conclusions and recommendations.
  • Prepare detailed reports outlining findings, mitigation strategies, and compliance considerations.
  • Investigate noise and vibration concerns and identify practical solutions.
  • Assist clients in achieving project acoustical performance goals and applicable code requirements.
  • Communicate technical information effectively to clients, architects, engineers, contractors, and project stakeholders.

Design Review & Recommendations

  • Review architectural and mechanical system designs for acoustical performance.
  • Provide recommendations related to:
    • Wall and floor-ceiling assemblies
    • Building envelope design
    • Mechanical equipment noise control
    • HVAC acoustics
    • Vibration isolation systems
    • Room acoustics and interior finishes
  • Collaborate with project teams throughout design and construction phases.

Modeling & Documentation

  • Develop acoustical models to evaluate project performance and design alternatives.
  • Prepare technical calculations, reports, modeling summaries, and presentations.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously while managing deadlines and deliverables.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Acoustics, Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Approximately 3-7 years of experience in acoustical consulting, noise and vibration consulting, or a related field.
  • Ability to independently perform acoustical and vibration field measurements.
  • Experience analyzing testing data and preparing technical reports.
  • Strong understanding of building acoustics, environmental noise, and vibration principles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regularly for project work.

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting residential, multifamily, commercial, healthcare, hospitality, mixed-use, or institutional projects.
  • Experience with architectural acoustics, environmental noise, and vibration consulting.
  • Familiarity with acoustical testing standards, building codes, and industry best practices.
  • Prior client-facing consulting experience.
