About the Opportunity
Our client is seeking a Commissioning Engineer to support the startup and commissioning of industrial process, renewable energy, waste-to-energy, and wastewater treatment facilities across North America.
This individual will play a critical role in transitioning newly constructed facilities into operation by executing commissioning activities, performing testing and inspections, troubleshooting equipment and controls systems, and supporting performance testing and project handover. The successful candidate will work closely with engineering, construction, automation, vendors, operators, and project management teams to ensure safe and successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the development and execution of commissioning plans, procedures, schedules, checklists, and testing protocols.
- Coordinate commissioning activities with project managers, engineering teams, construction personnel, automation specialists, vendors, subcontractors, and clients.
- Execute onsite commissioning activities from pre-commissioning through startup, Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), performance testing, and project handover.
- Verify mechanical completion and system readiness prior to commissioning activities.
- Perform equipment inspections, equipment checkout, calibration verification, loop checks, I/O checks, and functional testing.
- Execute dry and wet commissioning activities for mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, controls, automation, and process systems.
- Support PLC, HMI, and SCADA testing during startup and commissioning.
- Troubleshoot equipment, instrumentation, process, and control system issues and assist in implementing corrective actions.
- Coordinate with automation engineers and equipment manufacturers to verify system performance and functionality.
- Participate in commissioning safety planning, risk assessments, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and LOTO reviews.
- Maintain commissioning documentation including test reports, checklists, punch lists, and commissioning records.
- Track commissioning progress, testing results, corrective actions, and open issues.
- Support operator training, operational readiness activities, and project handover.
- Review as-built documentation, operating manuals, and turnover packages.
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture throughout project execution.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- 3-5+ years of industrial commissioning, startup, field service, operations, or related experience.
- Hands-on experience with equipment startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance testing.
- Experience working within industrial process facilities, wastewater treatment, renewable energy, power generation, chemical processing, or similar environments.
- Experience performing loop checks, I/O checks, functional testing, and equipment checkout activities.
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of commissioning and startup practices for industrial facilities.
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, controls, and automation systems.
- Working knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, industrial communication networks, and instrumentation.
- Ability to read and interpret:
- P&IDs
- Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
- Electrical Drawings
- Control Schematics
- Technical Documentation
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with LOTO procedures, risk assessments, permit-to-work systems, and commissioning safety practices.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline preferred.
- Equivalent technical education and relevant commissioning experience will also be considered.
