Position Overview
The Controls Engineer is responsible for implementing Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) systems both in-house and at customer sites. This role requires a strong understanding of customer material‑handling requirements and the ability to design, develop, test, and document software and system hardware that meets or exceeds expectations.
The Controls Engineer works both independently and as part of a team to provide technical support across the entire product range, including system integration, programming, run‑off, installation, and start‑up. The role also contributes to maintaining strong customer relationships and upholding the organization's reputation as a trusted provider of high‑quality automation solutions.
Key Responsibilities
System Development & Integration
- Program AGV vehicles and related control systems.
- Perform on‑site installation, system verification, client training, and customer support.
- Conduct system modifications, repairs, and continuous product improvements.
Operational & Documentation Duties
- Adhere to local 5S and safety practices.
- Meet planning, scheduling, and project deadlines.
- Assist in creating and updating operations and maintenance manuals.
- Provide daily progress updates to the Project Manager.
- Maintain accurate, organized, and up‑to‑date documentation using approved formats and storage systems.
General Responsibilities
- a. Stay current on organizational practices, policies, and technical standards.
b. Follow all health and safety procedures in alignment with legislative and industry requirements.
c. Ensure compliance obligations are met as required.
d. Pursue professional development opportunities, including technical training and leadership skill‑building.
e. Participate in the organization's Continuous Improvement Program, contributing as a team member or leader on improvement initiatives.
f. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial automation with proficiency in PLC programming, structured text, and CODESYS.
- Experience with AGV systems preferred; familiarity with Kollmorgen or Navitec AGV platforms is a plus.
- CAD knowledge desired.
- Electrical qualifications sufficient to understand, troubleshoot, and service 480V 3‑phase equipment, DC controls, and battery‑powered mobile equipment.
- Ability to lead integration and programming of complex systems.
- Ability to train technical personnel on both basic and advanced system integration.
- Strong communication skills in both individual and small‑group settings.
- Ability to write reports, technical correspondence, and policy/procedure documentation.
- Strong presentation skills, including the ability to address customer groups and management teams.
- Excellent problem‑solving ability.
- Self‑motivated and confident, with strong verbal and written professionalism.
- Commercial awareness and sensitivity to project cost considerations and sales opportunities.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to pass applicable drug screening and reference checks.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, technical comprehension, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Strong attention to detail and adherence to process and reporting requirements.
Education
- Minimum: Associate degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
- Preferred: Bachelor's degree in the same fields.
Responsibility for Company Property
- Responsible for proper use and care of organization‑provided laptop, phone, instruments, and hand tools.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- May be assigned leadership or supervisory duties for teams of engineers or technicians.
Communication Skills
- Ability to interpret policy manuals, safety requirements, operating instructions, and procedural documents.
- Ability to write technical reports and professional correspondence.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers, employees, and stakeholders.
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to perform basic mathematical functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Ability to calculate ratios, percentages, and interpret bar graphs.

- Capable of solving practical problems and addressing a variety of variables in environments with limited standardization.
- Able to interpret written, oral, or diagram-based instructions.

- Works under general supervision, independently completing routine tasks and seeking assistance when necessary.

- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally, and up to 10 lbs regularly.
Work Environment
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts and electrical hazards.
- Occasional work at heights, around fumes, or in outdoor conditions.
- Noise levels may be loud.
