Overview
We are partnering with a rapidly growing renewable energy organization seeking a Director, BESS Development to lead the technical and commercial development of utility-scale battery energy storage projects across North America.
This individual will serve as the internal subject matter expert for energy storage, driving technology strategy, supplier engagement, system optimization, and project development efforts from early-stage evaluation through financial close and construction readiness.
The role offers significant visibility across executive leadership and the opportunity to influence one of the industry's largest and fastest-growing storage portfolios.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical development of standalone and hybrid BESS projects from origination through start of construction.
- Define system architectures, storage durations, battery sizing strategies, PCS configurations, EMS approaches, and project layouts.
- Partner with Development, Construction, Procurement, Commercial, Interconnection, and Asset Management teams to optimize project value.
- Lead battery OEM and system integrator evaluations, RFP processes, technical reviews, and commercial assessments.
- Develop supplier relationships and support negotiation of supply, service, warranty, and performance agreements.
- Perform degradation and augmentation analysis, lifecycle cost assessments, and technology benchmarking.
- Support lender diligence, financing activities, and regulatory compliance initiatives.
- Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, domestic content requirements, FEOC regulations, and evolving market dynamics.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical discipline.
- 5+ years of direct utility-scale BESS experience.
- Strong understanding of battery technologies, system architecture, PCS, EMS, SCADA, and utility interconnection.
- Experience evaluating battery OEMs, integrators, suppliers, and commercial proposals.
- Knowledge of battery performance, degradation modeling, augmentation planning, and warranty structures.
- Experience supporting project finance, technical due diligence, and cross-functional project development activities.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and commercial decision-making capabilities.
- Ability to work onsite in Houston four days per week.
