The Opportunity
A growing building performance and engineering consulting firm is seeking a Director of Building Performance Services to lead the technical direction, operational execution, and strategic growth of its Building Commissioning and Performance group.
This is a hands-on leadership role that combines technical expertise, team development, client engagement, and operational oversight. The successful candidate will drive project excellence, establish technical standards and best practices, mentor engineering and project management staff, and serve as a trusted advisor to clients.
Reporting directly to executive leadership, this position offers the opportunity to influence both the technical and business direction of a well-established building performance practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee complex building performance and commissioning projects from planning through delivery.
- Develop and maintain technical standards, procedures, and templates across commissioning, benchmarking, energy auditing, building enclosure consulting, and facility condition assessment services.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and direction to project managers, technical staff, and administrative personnel.
- Support business development efforts through proposal review, client presentations, interviews, and relationship management.
- Train and onboard new team members through both classroom-based and field instruction.
- Evaluate and implement software platforms, tools, and equipment to support project execution and operational efficiency.
- Lead recruiting initiatives, including candidate evaluation, interviewing, and collaboration with Human Resources.
- Monitor project performance, utilization, invoicing, timesheets, and overall service delivery metrics.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Building Sciences, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of experience within building commissioning, energy engineering, building performance, or related consulting services.
- Demonstrated experience leading technical teams and managing complex client-facing projects.
- Strong understanding of commissioning, energy audits, building systems, facility assessments, and performance optimization strategies.
- Professional certifications such as PE, CCP, LEED AP, CEA, or similar credentials are highly preferred.
- Experience with industry software and project management tools is preferred.
- Familiarity with building performance legislation, energy compliance programs, or sustainability regulations is a plus.
- Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving, and client relationship management skills.

Additional Information
- Full-time, exempt position.
- Based in Tacoma, WA.
- Travel required as part of project execution and client support.
- Expected in-office/client-site presence approximately four days per week.
- Target utilization range of 65%-85%.
