3. Overview / Summary
This role is responsible for managing construction materials testing (CMT) and field inspection projects from initiation through delivery. You will oversee staff, coordinate with clients and internal engineering teams, and ensure testing and reporting meet project, regulatory, and QA/QC requirements. The position sits within a multidisciplinary environment supporting civil, structural, and geotechnical services, requiring practical coordination and decision-making across project teams.
4. Key Responsibilities
Manage multiple CMT projects, including scope, schedule, budget, and resource allocation
Supervise field and laboratory personnel; provide direction, training, and performance oversight
Coordinate with clients, contractors, and internal engineers to ensure project alignment and timely delivery
Review and approve field and laboratory test results, reports, and documentation for accuracy and compliance
Implement and maintain QA/QC procedures across all testing and inspection activities
Monitor project financials, including invoicing, cost tracking, and profitability
Support proposal development, including scope definition and cost estimates
Ensure compliance with applicable standards (ASTM, AASHTO, local/state requirements) and safety protocols
Address field issues in real time, providing practical solutions to maintain project progress
5. Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related discipline
5-10+ years of experience in construction materials testing, inspection, or geotechnical services
Demonstrated project management experience in CMT or construction engineering projects
Strong knowledge of soils, concrete, asphalt, and related testing procedures
Experience supervising field and/or laboratory staff
Proficiency in reviewing technical reports and ensuring QA/QC compliance
Valid driver's license with ability to visit project sites regularly
6. Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain
NICET certification (Soils, Concrete, or Construction Materials Testing)
Experience working within a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy
Familiarity with regional codes, specifications, and contractor practices in Alabama
