Solar Project Engineer
Overview
A Midwest‑based construction and engineering organization is seeking a Solar Project Engineer to support and execute commercial and industrial solar construction projects from pre‑construction through closeout. This role partners closely with project management, field leadership, subcontractors, and clients to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Projects range in size and complexity and may include site engineering, structural, electrical, and renewable energy scopes. The position requires frequent overnight travel throughout the Midwest.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the management of solar construction projects from pre‑construction through closeout using established company processes
- Assist with and track all financial aspects of assigned projects, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost control
- Develop, update, and maintain project schedules, including baseline schedules and progress updates
- Track project budget vs. actuals and support mitigation strategies to protect margin
- Monitor field productivity (estimated vs. actual) and support corrective actions as needed
- Coordinate with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams to resolve project issues
- Participate in and help facilitate productive project meetings
- Prepare conceptual information, exhibits, and documentation to communicate project ideas and execution plans
- Support project safety efforts, including audits, incident reporting, and documentation
- Assist with identification and documentation of project impacts, delays, and change events per contract requirements
- Utilize project management tools including scheduling software, financial reporting systems, BIM tools, and project communication platforms
- Support problem‑solving efforts by identifying root causes, developing solutions, and following through on implementation
Qualifications
- 1-5 years of experience in the solar industry
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent experience preferred
- Geotechnical experience is a plus
- Strong understanding of electrical systems installation, particularly PV / DC systems
- Estimating and quantity takeoff experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; advanced Excel skills required
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to make time‑sensitive decisions in complex environments
- Self‑motivated, highly organized, and detail‑oriented
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
- Willingness to travel overnight 3-4 days per week throughout the Midwest
