Associate Director of Mechanical Engineering
Position Summary
A rapidly growing engineering firm specializing in hyperscale data centers and mission-critical infrastructure is seeking an experienced Associate Director of Mechanical Engineering to join its senior leadership team. This fully remote role offers the opportunity to shape technical strategy, lead high-performing teams, and drive operational excellence across large-scale, high-impact projects for some of the world's leading tech and financial organizations.
The Associate Director will oversee staffing and capacity planning, manage external design partnerships (onshore and offshore), and lead onboarding and professional development initiatives. This role is critical in aligning recruiting efforts with project needs, accelerating team productivity, and building scalable systems and processes that support continued growth.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Lead and contribute to schematic and conceptual mechanical designs for complex projects.
- Perform and oversee advanced engineering calculations and QA/QC reviews.
- Serve as Engineer of Record (EoR) on select programs.
- Mentor and train mechanical engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
- Support the development of design standards and training programs.
- Utilize AutoCAD and Revit for design documentation as needed.
Operational Strategy & Process Improvement
- Drive strategic planning and hiring for the mechanical discipline.
- Develop and implement scalable policies, dashboards, and playbooks to support departmental growth.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to shape and enforce company-wide policies.
- Oversee resource allocation, budgeting, and performance tracking.
- Lead initiatives to attract, retain, and develop a diverse and high-performing team.
Management & Team Development
- Provide coaching and career development support to team members.
- Lead strategic initiatives and cross-functional collaboration efforts.
- Promote a culture of innovation, accountability, and service leadership.
- Ensure alignment between departmental goals and broader organizational strategy.
- Monitor team performance and support continuous improvement efforts.
Qualifications
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with advanced expertise in mechanical systems design.
- Proven leadership experience in engineering operations, team management, and strategic planning.
- Strong command of AutoCAD, Revit, and MS Office tools.
- Skilled in mechanical calculations, code compliance, and design documentation.
- Exceptional communication, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
- Experience working in a remote environment with distributed teams.
- Familiarity with mission-critical projects such as data centers, healthcare, or industrial facilities is strongly preferred.
