Building Automation Design Engineer
Job Summary
The Controls Design Engineer will be responsible for developing detailed HVAC and building automation control solutions for clients and project teams. This role involves creating control system drawings, drafting sequences of operation, and selecting components that align with project requirements and installation needs. The engineer will serve as a key technical contributor, producing accurate and complete design documentation while collaborating with cross‑functional teams to support successful field implementation.
Responsibilities include designing integrations with various building systems, applying strong HVAC and BAS knowledge to create efficient and cost‑effective solutions, and contributing to the ongoing improvement of internal design standards and processes.
Essential Job Functions
- Develop AutoCAD‑based control system drawings, such as riser diagrams, device layouts, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts
- Write and revise sequences of operation (SOO) based on mechanical plans and project specifications
- Coordinate design details with mechanical engineers, project managers, and field technicians to ensure alignment between design intent and installation practices
- Select system components including sensors, actuators, controllers, networking hardware, and panel materials
- Prepare full submittal and construction documentation, including network architecture diagrams and addressing schedules
- Support RFIs, submittal feedback, and field inquiries throughout construction
- Provide technical assistance during system startup, commissioning, and project turnover
- Ensure compliance with relevant codes, industry standards, and client requirements
- Participate in the creation and refinement of standard design templates and internal process improvements

- Ability to collaborate effectively with mechanical engineers, project managers, field technicians, and other stakeholders
- Strong attention to detail and excellent technical documentation skills
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical capabilities, particularly for field coordination and technical support
- Solid understanding of the design‑to‑commissioning project lifecycle
- Desire to contribute to improved workflows, documentation standards, and design templates
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to break down and explain technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences
- Strong teamwork and customer‑focused mindset
Education
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field
Experience / Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in HVAC controls design, building automation, or smart building technologies
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for producing detailed control drawings
- Familiarity with HVAC systems, mechanical plans, and control sequences
- Basic understanding of DDC platforms (such as Tridium Niagara, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Siemens, etc.)
- Knowledge of communication protocols including BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks
- Strong communication and documentation skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Primarily office‑based role with occasional lifting of materials up to 20 pounds
- May require climbing stairs or ladders
- Must be comfortable working in both office and customer site environments
- Travel up to 25% as needed
