Construction Engineer

An employee-owned multi-disciplined engineering firm serving a variety of public and private clients throughout Ohio. We are currently seeking an experienced Construction Engineer to act as owner's representative on public and private construction projects out of our offices located in Columbus and Newark, Ohio. We will consider applicants with 4+ years' experience in the Construction Engineering field. Applicants with longer experience in related fields such as general contracting, facilities management, and similar will also be considered.

Responsibilities

In this position, you will work to protect our client's interest as a project owner's representative in design-bid-build projects. You will do this by helping to ensure that the construction team builds the project according to the approved plans and specifications and adheres to the construction contract. This begins with preparing bidding documents for public bids from an approved template, and continues with managing and monitoring the bid and contract award process. You will monitor construction progress using a team of construction inspectors. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Prepare bid documents.

  • Place advertisements for bid on the client's behalf.

  • Field pre-bid questions.

  • Calculate bid tabulations.

  • Prepare the letter of recommendation of award.

  • Create and circulate conformed contracts.

  • Review standard shop drawings, forward to designer for further review if necessary.

  • Host the pre-bid meeting.

  • Manage project inspection.

  • Review and audit inspection documentation.

  • Review project issues and assist in the interpretation of the plans. Forward plan issues as needed to the designer for their review.

  • Review and recommend pay applications.

  • Review and assist in negotiating change orders.

  • Perform substantial completion walk-through and generate punch list.

  • Perform final walk-through and sign off on project completion.

  • Schedule and attend 1-year warranty walk-through and notify Contractor of warranty claims.

You will also have managerial responsibility over a small team of project inspectors. You will monitor and coach them on project performance, ensure they have the tools they need to perform their work, and otherwise exercise managerial responsibilities to them.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-Accredited Institution.

  • 8+ years of experience construction engineering or management

  • PE License preferred

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, ability to direct work and provide mentorship to others.
