Our client is a confidential engineering firm specializing in electrical and mechanical systems for mission-critical environments. With a portfolio that includes hyperscale data centers for major tech companies, they are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer with a strong electrical background to join their national commissioning team.
This is a remote role with full-time travel to project sites across the country. As a 1099 contractor, you'll be under long-term contract and treated as a core member of the team, with structured compensation and support that rivals traditional employment.
Responsibilities

- Review design documents, submittals, and installation practices for compliance with specifications and standards.
- Develop and execute commissioning scripts, procedures, and reports.
- Coordinate with construction teams, vendors, and client stakeholders to manage commissioning schedules and resolve issues.
- Conduct site audits, document deficiencies, and drive corrective actions.
- Support integrated systems testing and final turnover documentation.
- Travel nationwide to project sites, often in multi-week stints (e.g., 3 weeks on, 1 week off).
Qualifications
- Strong electrical engineering background with hands-on commissioning experience.
- Direct experience in data centers is preferred; experience in healthcare or other 24/7 critical facilities is also valuable.
- Familiarity with mission-critical systems including power distribution, backup power, and controls.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, one-lines, and schematics.
- Experience with commissioning protocols and standards (e.g., ASHRAE, NEBB, NETA).
- Comfortable working independently and managing field activities.
- Willing and able to travel 100% of the time.
Contract Structure & Compensation
- 1099 contractor engagement with long-term stability (most team members have been with the firm 5-6 years).
- Competitive base compensation (e.g., $100K/year) plus:
- Healthcare stipend (e.g., $1,800/month)
- 401(k) contribution (e.g., $3,000/year)
- Accountant support stipend (e.g., $1,000/year)
- Employer-side FICA reimbursement (approx. 25%)
- Paid twice monthly throughout the year.
- Reimbursement for travel expenses.
- Optional company credit card or personal card use with bonus incentives.
- 160 hours of PTO/sick time annually, plus bank holidays.
- Structured time-off model: after three consecutive weeks on-site (typically 60-hour weeks), one week off is provided (not deducted from PTO).
If you're a commissioning professional with deep electrical expertise and a passion for high-performance infrastructure, this is a rare opportunity to join a team that values long-term relationships, flexibility, and excellence in delivery.
