Field Instrument and Electrical Specialist

Job Title: Field I&E Specialist
Location: Houston, TX or Remote
Travel: 75%+

Overview
This role serves as the go to field expert for instrumentation, electrical, and controls issues across multiple water and wastewater facilities. You'll be deployed to sites when problems exceed local capabilities, working independently to diagnose and resolve complex system failures.

This position requires strong hands on experience across PLCs, SCADA, electrical systems, and process instrumentation. You'll work directly with site teams to fix issues, explain root cause, and strengthen on site troubleshooting capability.


Key Responsibilities

Field Troubleshooting

  • Respond to escalated control system and electrical issues across operating sites
  • Diagnose faults across PLCs (Allen Bradley preferred), SCADA, HMIs, and networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus)
  • Troubleshoot MCCs, VFDs, switchgear, transformers, and distribution systems
  • Perform loop checks, signal tracing, and instrument diagnostics (flow, level, pressure, analyzers)
  • Execute repairs with minimal impact to plant operations

Electrical & Controls

  • Test and repair motors, control circuits, and VFD systems
  • Interpret and update electrical drawings, one lines, and panel layouts
  • Perform testing such as megger, infrared scanning, and power quality checks
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards including NFPA 70E and LOTO

Instrumentation

  • Calibrate and verify process instrumentation
  • Maintain accurate calibration and service records
  • Support proper instrument selection and maintenance practices

Site Support

  • Partner with operators and maintenance teams to resolve issues and transfer knowledge
  • Provide informal training during site visits
  • Document work performed and recommend follow up actions
  • Identify recurring issues and provide input on system improvements

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in electronics or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years in industrial process controls or similar environment
  • Strong experience with PLCs, instrumentation, and electrical systems
  • Ability to read schematics, P&IDs, and loop drawings
  • Proficient with calibration and diagnostic tools
  • Solid understanding of electrical safety standards
