Position Overview

The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations of a project‑driven design‑build construction firm. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and effective cash flow management.

The Controller partners closely with executive leadership and project teams to support profitability, maintain job cost accuracy, and provide financial insight that informs strategic decision‑making across the business.


Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements
  • Develop, maintain, and improve job costing systems to track project performance, budgets, and profitability
  • Prepare, review, and analyze work‑in‑progress (WIP) schedules, including percentage‑of‑completion accounting and revenue recognition
  • Prepare financial reports, forecasts, and variance analyses for executive leadership
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations
  • Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial integrity
  • Oversee cash flow management, including forecasting, banking relationships, and credit facilities
  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and other financial consultants
  • Support annual budgeting and longer‑term strategic planning efforts
  • Collaborate with project managers to monitor project financial health and proactively address risks or cost overruns
  • Lead, manage, and mentor accounting staff, fostering accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA preferred
  • 4-7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
  • Construction industry experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in job costing, WIP reporting, and construction revenue recognition
  • Experience with construction accounting and project management systems strongly preferred
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving abilities
  • Ability to clearly communicate financial information to non‑financial stakeholders

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Primarily office‑based role
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Occasional lifting of items up to 15 pounds
  • Ability to clearly see, hear, speak, and communicate with internal teams and external partners
