Lead Substation Engineer

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Lead Substation Engineer to provide technical leadership and project oversight within a growing Substation Engineering team.

This role requires direct experience delivering substation projects for electric utilities, ranging from 4kV to 345kV. The successful candidate will be client-facing, collaborating across multiple engineering disciplines, and playing a key role in ensuring projects are delivered on time and to a high standard. Strong project management capabilities, communication skills, and a collaborative mindset are essential.

Key Technical Responsibilities

  • Develop substation general arrangements
  • Design control house layouts
  • Produce plans and sections drawings
  • Perform grounding and lightning protection design
  • Prepare conduit and trench layouts
  • Generate material lists and construction specifications
  • Perform engineering calculations and studies, including:
    • Grounding analysis
    • Lightning protection studies
    • Voltage drop calculations
    • AC/DC load studies

Engineering Leadership Responsibilities

  • Serve as Project Engineering Lead on substation projects
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to engineers and designers
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control reviews
  • Support projects from initial scoping through final design and closeout
  • Provide construction phase support as needed
  • Maintain a strong client-focused approach with high standards of customer service
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required, or FE with clear path toward licensure
  • Minimum 8+ years of experience in the electric utility industry
  • Demonstrated experience in substation engineering (electrical and/or physical design)
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
