Northern VA Hybrid Senior Electrical Engineer Water/Wastewater
About the Role
This position is ideal for an experienced electrical engineer who enjoys leading complex infrastructure projects, particularly in the water and wastewater sector. As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing electrical system design, ensuring technical accuracy, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and guiding less‑experienced staff. The role combines hands‑on design work with project leadership, technical review, and field responsibilities to ensure that all electrical systems meet client requirements, safety codes, and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Take the lead on electrical engineering design for water and wastewater treatment facilities, working closely with mechanical, HVAC, and other engineering groups to ensure cohesive project delivery.
- Produce engineering documentation including calculations, technical drawings, specifications, and detailed design packages such as one‑line diagrams, power distribution layouts, MCC and switchgear design, grounding systems, lighting layouts, cable tray routing, UPS/load lists, and cable sizing.
- Perform voltage drop analysis, system reliability evaluations, and other design studies to validate system performance.
- Review and approve contractor submittals, specifications, technical manuals, and other project documents.
- Respond to contractor inquiries, address RFIs, and evaluate proposed change orders.
- Participate in meetings with clients to discuss conceptual design approaches, facility standards, and technical direction.
- Prepare engineering reports, proposals, technical memoranda, and formal contract documentation.
- Provide on‑site support during system startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and field investigations.
- Develop accurate engineering cost estimates for planning and design phases.
- Offer mentorship, technical guidance, and support to junior engineers as they develop their skills.
- Ensure all design work adheres to NEC, NFPA 820, and other applicable electrical safety standards and regulations.
- Travel occasionally for field work, site reviews, and client coordination meetings.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Electrical Engineering, with the ability to obtain licensure in additional states as needed.
- A minimum of eight years of relevant experience in electrical system design, construction, and commissioning for water and wastewater facilities.
- Proficiency with engineering and design tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and ETAP/SKM; familiarity with lighting design software is also valuable.
- Strong knowledge of NEC, NFPA 820, and other applicable electrical codes.
- Excellent communication skills, technical writing ability, and strong organizational habits.
- Ability to perform both independent and team‑based engineering work with solid problem‑solving capability.
- Physical ability to conduct site inspections, which may involve walking, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs as required.
- Primarily office‑based role with occasional visits to active project sites and construction environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- 6 or more years of experience designing, constructing, and commissioning electrical systems for water and wastewater facilities.
- PE or EIT in Virginia
- Willingness and flexibility to travel for short durations to project or client locations when necessary.
