Operations Engineer

Our client is seeking an Operations Engineer to optimize resource recovery and wastewater treatment facilities to operate safely, efficiently, reliably, and in compliance with all regulatory requirements.

The primary focus of this position is to own day-to-day technical performance across operating facilities, maximize process efficiency and energy generation, lead troubleshooting efforts, and leverage operational data to improve plant uptime and reliability. This individual will work closely with construction and commissioning teams during facility startups and handovers while helping develop standardized operating practices across multiple sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and optimize plant performance, including biological treatment systems, resource recovery processes, and energy generation assets.
  • Troubleshoot operational issues and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and maintenance protocols.
  • Support facility startup, commissioning, and operational handover activities.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to incorporate operational lessons learned into future facility designs.
  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance programs across operating sites.
  • Analyze operational data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage capital improvement projects, including scope development, contractor coordination, execution, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Provide technical support and training for operations personnel.
  • Prepare operational reports and communicate performance findings to leadership.
  • Update P&IDs and other technical documentation to reflect field modifications and as-built conditions.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental, Process, or a related Engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in industrial wastewater treatment, biological treatment systems, resource recovery operations, bioenergy generation, or related process industries.
  • Experience managing capital projects including plant upgrades, debottlenecking initiatives, and process improvement projects.
  • Experience supporting or operating large-scale industrial treatment, resource recovery, energy generation, food and beverage, or manufacturing facilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret process flow diagrams, P&IDs, blueprints, and technical documentation.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills in fast-paced operating environments.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, process controls, and operational data analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Willingness to travel to operating sites as needed.

Location & Travel

  • Position may be based remotely or from one of the organization's operating locations.
  • Travel requirements are expected to range from approximately 25% to 50%, depending on location and business needs.
  • Ability to work in industrial environments, including climbing ladders, accessing confined spaces, and lifting equipment up to 50 pounds.
