Senior Building Envelope Consultant

An established engineering consultancy is looking to bring an experienced Consulting Engineer into its team. The role sits within a technically focused group working on a mix of new design, investigation work, and repair of existing buildings.

The work is varied and hands-on. You'll be involved from early investigation through to design and construction support, often spending time on site as well as in the office. Projects range from small, focused commissions to more complex schemes that require coordination across teams and close interaction with clients.

The Role

You'll typically take responsibility for small to medium-sized projects and support senior staff on larger or more technically challenging work. Depending on workload, this could mean running a single substantial project or overseeing several smaller ones at once, including supervising junior engineers.

Typical Work Will Include

  • Supporting senior engineers with investigations, design work, and site inspections
  • Assessing existing buildings and identifying the causes of building envelope failures
  • Developing practical repair solutions for walls, roofs, glazing, and waterproofing systems
  • Working with architects and contractors to resolve design and construction issues
  • Carrying out site-based investigations, including sampling and testing of envelope components such as:
    • Cladding systems
    • Windows and curtain walls
    • Roofing and skylights
    • Plaza decks, flooring, and below-grade waterproofing
  • Undertaking water ingress testing and condition surveys
  • Producing repair designs and technical documentation
  • Assisting with construction-stage queries and site visits
  • Reviewing drawings and specifications prepared by others
  • Providing guidance and informal mentoring to less experienced staff
  • Supporting dispute resolution or litigation-related work where required

What the Firm Is Looking For

  • A degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Architectural Engineering
  • Around five years or more of relevant industry experience
  • Chartered status, or equivalent professional registration (P.E. or R.A.)
  • Someone comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage deadlines
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Solid computer skills, including technical and graphical outputs

Experience in façade or curtain wall design, historic buildings, rope access/climbing, or client-facing technical presentations would be useful but isn't a requirement.

Working Environment & Progression

The firm operates a collaborative, low‑ego working culture and values people who are technically curious and practical in their approach. Staff are encouraged to continue developing professionally through a mix of formal training, external courses, and learning on the job.

Working arrangements are flexible where possible, including hybrid working, and additional time spent beyond core hours is recognised.

Compensation is structured to reflect both individual contribution and the overall performance of the business. This includes a competitive base salary, annual reviews, and the opportunity to participate in bonus and profit-sharing arrangements. Over the longer term, there are options for employees to become more closely involved in the ownership and success of the practice.

Benefits are comprehensive and designed to provide strong support around healthcare, retirement saving, and overall wellbeing.
