Substation Design Engineer - HV P&C

Overview
A fast‑growing organization in the technology, energy, and infrastructure space is seeking an experienced Protection & Control (P&C) Design Engineer to support high‑voltage substation projects across medium‑ and large‑scale EPC initiatives. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving complex system protection challenges, developing detailed control schemes, and supporting field implementation within a dynamic, innovation‑driven environment.

Role Summary
Reporting to an engineering or field service manager, the P&C Design Engineer will contribute to the full lifecycle of substation protection and controls design. This includes conceptual engineering, relay protection philosophy, SCADA/automation integration, detailed schematics and wiring, and QA/QC reviews. The position requires strong technical independence, the ability to make engineering decisions confidently, and the capability to support multidisciplinary project teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and review protection and control designs, including one‑lines, three‑lines, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and logic diagrams.
  • Make independent engineering decisions regarding system protection methods, application challenges, relay logic, and control schemes.
  • Apply advanced engineering practices using IEC, ANSI, and other applicable codes and standards across P&C design and documentation.
  • Prepare relay protection philosophy documents, relay settings inputs, and coordination considerations.
  • Coordinate QA/QC reviews and provide final sign‑off for P&C documents issued for procurement and construction.
  • Support SCADA/RTU/HMI integration, including point lists, communication architectures, and equipment configuration requirements.
  • Generate specifications and bills of material for protection, controls, and automation equipment.
  • Perform engineering calculations related to short‑circuit duties, CT/VT application, DC system sizing, control power requirements, and P&C design considerations.
  • Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and leadership to junior team members, reinforcing a strong engineering culture.
  • Travel to project sites as required to support commissioning, implementation reviews, or field investigations.

Qualifications

  • BSEE or BSCE with at least 5 years of relevant P&C or substation engineering experience, or an M.S. in engineering with equivalent experience.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration or strong intent to obtain licensure within a set timeline.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • Position classified as exempt.

Work Environment
This is a primarily remote role, with periodic travel to project or data center locations for design reviews, commissioning support, or engineering walkdowns. Reasonable accommodations can be provided as needed.
