Traffic Engineer
This role supports CDOT's Traffic, Specifications, Standards, and Policy unit, which provides traffic safety and engineering guidance for transportation planning and project development. The position assists in developing and updating traffic engineering standards, specifications, manuals, and guidelines, and contributes to statewide traffic control device evaluations and asset management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft and revise traffic engineering standards, specifications, and manuals using tools like MicroStation and SignCAD
- Assist in traffic studies, safety assessments, crash analysis, and simulation modeling
- Support CDOT programs including flagger certification, memorial sign programs, and work zone safety
- Collect and manage traffic control asset data (e.g., signs, striping, guardrails)
- Develop dashboards and data visualizations to support decision-making
- Coordinate statewide training and provide customer support for internal and external stakeholders
- Collaborate with contractors, consultants, and regional teams on product testing and implementation
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations (e.g., MUTCD, MASH) and CDOT stewardship agreements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Engineer Intern (EI) registration with the Colorado State Board of Licensure
(or a valid Colorado PE license as a substitute) - Valid driver's license
- Ability to obtain PE licensure within 8 years of appointment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong understanding of traffic engineering principles, standards, and regulatory compliance
- Experience with data analysis, asset management, and engineering software
- Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- High ethical standards and professional integrity
