Tunneling Project/Field Engineer
Our client is seeking a highly motivated Tunneling Project / Field Engineer to support the planning and execution of complex underground construction projects in the San Jose area. This individual will play a key role in field operations, project coordination, and ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, and within budget. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in tunneling environments and thrives in a fast-paced heavy civil construction setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Project Managers and Superintendents with day-to-day operations on tunneling and underground construction projects
- Support field activities including shaft construction, TBM operations, microtunneling, or conventional drill-and-blast methods
- Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of materials and equipment
- Track project progress, quantities, and productivity; maintain accurate project documentation
- Prepare RFIs, submittals, change orders, and daily/weekly reports
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, plans, and safety standards
- Conduct site inspections and quality control reviews
- Collaborate with engineering and design teams to resolve technical issues in the field
- Assist with project scheduling, cost tracking, and forecasting
- Maintain strong communication with internal teams and external stakeholders
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field
- Experience working on at least one tunneling project as a Project Engineer or Field Engineer (TBM, microtunneling, or similar underground work)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Strong understanding of heavy civil construction practices, particularly underground utilities and tunneling methods
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and geotechnical reports
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Willingness to work in field environments, including underground conditions
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cost control, scheduling software (Primavera P6, MS Project), or construction management platforms
- Familiarity with safety regulations related to tunneling (OSHA and Cal/OSHA standards)
- EIT certification or progress toward professional licensure
