About the Role
We are seeking a Controls Technician based in the Columbus, Ohio area to support the installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and facility control systems. This role involves a combination of local project work and regional travel, supporting both in-state and out-of-state projects.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical aptitude, hands-on field experience, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. This position plays a key role in ensuring systems are installed and commissioned according to design intent while maintaining quality, safety, and performance standards.
Travel expectations include a rotational schedule of approximately two weeks on out-of-state projects followed by two weeks supporting projects within Ohio.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, commission, and troubleshoot building automation and control systems in accordance with project plans and specifications.
- Perform system diagnostics and resolve issues in collaboration with contractors, engineers, and other trades.
- Calibrate devices and perform point-to-point verification on controllers, sensors, and field equipment.
- Execute functional testing of systems to ensure proper operation based on sequence of operations.
- Configure operator workstations, control devices, and associated software.
- Modify and optimize existing BAS systems as needed to improve performance or resolve issues.
- Participate in project turnover meetings and coordinate effectively with field teams.
- Communicate project status, progress, and issues clearly to project managers and clients.
- Work closely with general contractors, mechanical contractors, engineers, and subcontractors.
- Assist in third-party commissioning and support system validation activities.
- Complete commissioning documentation and provide accurate information for as-built records.
- Deliver basic system training to owners/operators during project turnover.
- Identify opportunities for system improvements and communicate recommendations to project teams.
- Follow all safety standards and maintain a strong commitment to job site safety.
- Continuously develop technical knowledge through training, self-study, and field experience.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2+ years of experience in HVAC controls, building automation, or related field.
- Working knowledge of HVAC systems and basic control strategies.
- Experience with BAS platforms and communication protocols (e.g., Niagara, BACnet, Modbus) preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret control drawings, schematics, and sequences of operation.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with configuration software tools.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
- Ability to work independently and manage tasks in a fast-paced field environment.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Work Environment & Travel
- This position is based in Columbus, Ohio.
- Approximately 30% travel is required, including a rotation of:
- ~2 weeks supporting out-of-state projects
- ~2 weeks supporting projects within Ohio
- Travel may involve driving or air travel depending on project location.
- Per diem, lodging, and travel accommodations are typically provided for out-of-state assignments.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and work on job sites for extended periods.
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and lifts, and work in confined or elevated spaces.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Manual dexterity to handle wiring, tools, and small components.
- Ability to work in various environments, including indoor, outdoor, and mechanical spaces.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Visual and auditory capability to safely perform field tasks and interpret system information.
