About the Opportunity
A well-established engineering consultancy is seeking a Municipal Engineering Manager to lead and grow its municipal engineering practice.
This is a leadership opportunity for an experienced Municipal Engineer who enjoys client interaction, business development, team leadership, and project delivery. The successful candidate will act as a trusted advisor to municipal clients while overseeing project execution, financial performance, and the continued growth of the municipal practice.
This role offers a clear pathway to senior leadership while maintaining a strong technical and client-facing presence.
Position Overview
The Municipal Department Manager will oversee a portfolio of municipal clients while leading the delivery of infrastructure improvement and community development projects.
Project responsibilities may include:
- Municipal engineering services
- Roadway and transportation improvements
- Stormwater management systems
- Infrastructure rehabilitation projects
- Utility infrastructure upgrades
- Capital improvement programmes
- Development review and construction administration
This role combines technical leadership, client management, business development, and operational oversight.
Key Responsibilities
Municipal Client Leadership
- Serve as the primary engineering representative for municipal clients.
- Attend client meetings, public meetings, and stakeholder discussions.
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with municipalities, agencies, and community stakeholders.
- Provide trusted technical guidance and strategic infrastructure recommendations.
Project Management & Delivery
- Manage municipal engineering projects from planning through construction.
- Oversee project schedules, budgets, staffing, and deliverables.
- Review development applications and engineering submissions.
- Lead permitting, regulatory approvals, and construction administration efforts.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to a high standard.
Practice Growth & Business Development
- Drive growth of the municipal engineering practice.
- Develop new client relationships and expand existing accounts.
- Prepare proposals, scope documents, and project contracts.
- Participate in industry organisations, networking events, and community engagement activities.
- Identify opportunities for additional services and strategic growth.
Financial & Operational Management
- Manage project financial performance and departmental profitability.
- Monitor utilisation, project budgets, and forecasting.
- Ensure compliance with contractual obligations and project objectives.
- Support strategic planning and operational decision-making.
Team Leadership
- Mentor engineers and project managers.
- Support staff development, recruitment, and succession planning.
- Promote technical excellence and client service across the team.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
- Professional Engineer (PE) licence.
- 15+ years of municipal engineering experience.
- Experience serving municipal clients and public agencies.
- Proven track record of client development and business growth.
- Strong project management and team leadership experience.
Preferred
- Experience leading a municipal engineering department or practice.
- Strong understanding of land development review and infrastructure projects.
- Experience managing project financials and departmental performance.
- Established relationships within the municipal engineering market.
