Survey and Mapping Practice Leader | Chantilly, VA

A well-established engineering and consulting firm is seeking an experienced Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) to lead and grow its Survey & Mapping practice. This senior leadership role will be responsible for the strategic direction, operational management, technical oversight, and continued expansion of the surveying division.

This position offers the opportunity to oversee a multidisciplinary team of survey professionals, project managers, field personnel, and technical staff while driving operational excellence, business growth, innovation, and client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Department Management

• Provide leadership and oversight for all surveying and mapping operations.
• Develop and execute departmental strategies that support overall business objectives.
• Establish and maintain policies, procedures, and technical standards.
• Monitor workload forecasting, staffing requirements, project performance, and financial metrics.
• Foster a positive, collaborative, and high-performance culture across the department.

Team Development

• Mentor, coach, and develop licensed and non-licensed survey professionals.
• Promote professional growth, accountability, and continuous learning.
• Support recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and succession planning initiatives.
• Partner with leadership on performance management and career development planning.

Project & Operational Oversight

• Provide oversight and guidance on land surveying projects.
• Support budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, and project execution efforts.
• Ensure project deliverables meet quality, timeline, and client expectations.
• Maintain expertise in surveying methodologies, technology, and industry best practices.

Business Development & Client Relations

• Build and maintain strong relationships with public and private sector clients.
• Assist in preparing proposals, scopes of work, budgets, and cost estimates.
• Support RFQs, RFPs, presentations, and strategic pursuits.
• Identify opportunities for growth, service expansion, and market development.

Quality & Innovation

• Oversee QA/QC programs and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Evaluate and implement emerging technologies and workflows.
• Enhance operational efficiency, accuracy, and client service through innovation.

Safety & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with professional surveying standards and applicable regulations.
• Promote a strong culture of safety across field and office operations.
• Maintain adherence to company policies and risk management practices.

Qualifications

• Active Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license required.
• Extensive experience in land surveying, project management, and surveying operations.
• Proven leadership experience managing teams, departments, or business units.
• Strong background in boundary, topographic, construction, and geospatial surveying services.
• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial management, and operational planning.
• Knowledge of modern surveying technologies, software platforms, and data collection methods.
• Demonstrated success leading organizational growth and strategic initiatives.
• Strong communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills.
