Building Automation Data Center Lead Technician
Building Automation Data Center Lead Technician - Job Description
Building Automation Data Center Lead Technician
Location: Manassas or Ashburn, Virginia
Salary: Up to $130k, based on experience
Sector: Mission-critical data center controls
About the Opportunity
A well-established consultancy is building out the controls division of its business, with the goal of replicating the proven success of its EPMS division on the building automation side. This is a chance to get in early on a growing team that works exclusively within mission-critical data center environments.
They are hiring across both technician and lead technician levels, so the role can be shaped around your experience. Whether you are a hands-on controls tech looking for your next step or an experienced lead ready to take ownership on site, there is a seat here for the right person.
What You'll Be Doing
- Installing, commissioning, and maintaining building automation and controls systems across active data center sites
- Working hands-on with BAS/BMS hardware and software in a mission-critical setting
- Building, configuring, and maintaining the Niagara front end: graphics, dashboards, schedules, alarms, and trends that operators rely on day to day
- Programming and configuring JACEs and Supervisor stations, mapping points, and bringing new devices online
- Integrating third-party equipment over BACnet, Modbus, and similar protocols into a single Niagara front end
- Troubleshooting and resolving controls issues to keep critical infrastructure running
- For lead-level candidates: guiding junior techs, owning site work, and acting as a point of contact on the ground
- Partnering with the wider project team to deliver work to a high standard
BAS & Niagara Experience
This is a controls-first role, so real building automation experience matters more than anything. The strongest candidates live and breathe the Niagara front end and can speak to the full lifecycle, from wiring and point-to-point checks through to a clean, operator-ready supervisor.
- Hands-on Niagara Framework experience (N4 / AX): building and editing graphics, point mapping, programming logic, and front-end commissioning
- Comfortable working across JACEs and Supervisor: station setup, device discovery, histories, alarms, and schedules
- Understanding of how the front end ties back to field controllers, sensors, and mechanical equipment on a live site
- Exposure to integration work (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, MQTT) is a strong plus
- Niagara certification is welcome but not a dealbreaker if the hands-on experience is there
What They're Looking For
- Strong building automation / controls background, with Niagara front-end experience front and center
- Familiarity with the wider controls ecosystem (Tridium, Distech, Metasys, JCI, ALC, or similar) is a plus
- A background in mission-critical, data center, or similar high-stakes environments is a strong plus
- Strong troubleshooting instincts and a genuine ownership mentality
- Lead technicians: a track record of running site work, owning the front end, and mentoring others
- Technicians: solid controls fundamentals and the drive to grow into more responsibility
Why It's Worth a Look
- Get in at the ground floor of a controls division backed by an already-successful EPMS operation
- Exclusive focus on mission-critical data center work, the busiest corner of the market right now
- Genuine room to grow as the division scales
- Competitive pay up to $130k depending on level and experience
