Senior Engineer/Consultant - DES/Microgrids
Role Summary
This senior-level engineering/consulting position is intended for experienced professionals who excel in technical leadership and project delivery. In this role, you'll guide project teams, offer strategic technical direction, and perform advanced engineering and economic analyses with a high degree of independence. You will help define project scopes, estimate work timelines, and ensure that deliverables are completed on schedule.
A major focus of the role involves conducting detailed power system studies using industry-standard simulation and modeling platforms. Strong knowledge of power system behavior-particularly involving inverter-based resources, energy storage technologies, induction and synchronous machines, and both grid-following and grid-forming controls-is essential. You will be responsible for interpreting study results, validating models, and using those insights to inform design recommendations.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive power system analyses and generator interconnection evaluations to ensure compliance with client requirements and grid reliability standards.
- Build and review models using tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC, EMTP-RV, RSCAD, PSS/E, CYMDIST, Synergi, ASPEN, and similar platforms.
- Create and manage detailed project plans, tracking progress, risks, and critical decisions.
- Provide coaching and support to junior staff, including feedback for performance growth.
- Identify client needs and potential opportunities, sharing insights with internal leadership.
- Maintain a proactive, solution-oriented approach to customer requests and evolving project challenges.
- Work effectively in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision.
- Produce accurate, high‑quality technical documentation and study reports.
- Contribute to a collaborative team culture and uphold the organization's values and mission.
- Remain current on emerging technologies, industry standards, and trends relevant to power systems.
Required Qualifications

Systems & Skills
- Ability to work effectively and respectfully in diverse, inclusive environments.
- Strong teamwork skills and professional communication style.
- Excellent technical writing and presentation abilities.
- Capability to identify project needs, propose solutions, and support proposal development.
- Deep understanding of power system dynamics, transient behavior, and steady‑state analysis.
- Knowledge of grid standards such as IEEE 1547, IEEE 519, IEEE 2800, and comparable regional rules.
- Hands‑on experience using major power systems modeling tools (e.g., PSCAD/EMTDC, EMTP‑RV, RSCAD, PSS/E, CYMDIST, Synergi, ASPEN).
Preferred Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one.
- Degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
- Experience with controller‑ or hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing.
- Familiarity with interconnection processes for regional transmission operators or reliability governing bodies.
- Background in DER integration studies, microgrid analysis, or microgrid engineering.
Systems & Skills
- Strong knowledge of power system protection concepts.
- Experience using TSAT or similar tools for advanced system stability analyses.
