Traffic Discipline Lead
A regional leader in transportation planning and infrastructure design is seeking a Traffic Discipline Lead to anchor and grow their traffic engineering practice from either their Boise, ID or Salt Lake City, UT office.
This senior-level role is ideal for a traffic engineer with 15+ years of experience, a PTOE certification, and a PE license in Utah or Idaho. Strong, established relationships with UDOT, ITD, and other local agencies are essential.
As the Traffic Discipline Lead, you'll drive the firm's strategy for traffic services across the Intermountain West, oversee key projects, and collaborate closely with public agency clients and internal technical teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as the technical lead and subject matter expert for traffic operations, analysis, and safety across multiple offices.
Lead and oversee complex traffic studies, ICEs, signal timing/coordination plans, and corridor/multimodal safety evaluations.
Manage project teams, scopes, schedules, and budgets.
Maintain and grow relationships with state and local transportation agencies, especially UDOT or ITD.
Provide strategic input into the firm's transportation growth initiatives across Utah and Idaho.
Support or lead proposal efforts and represent the firm at industry and client-facing events.
Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and cultivate a strong technical bench in the region.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah or Idaho (required)
PTOE certification (required)
15+ years of traffic engineering experience, including project management and staff leadership
Proven relationships with UDOT, ITD, MPOs, or regional municipalities
Proficiency in traffic engineering software such as Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, and VISSIM
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing and client presentations
Preferred Experience:
Experience leading multidisciplinary teams or integrating traffic design into larger transportation projects
Familiarity with state agency processes for project delivery, procurement, and permitting
Past involvement in professional organizations (e.g., ITE, ASCE)
