Geotechnical / CMT Laboratory Manager
An established engineering and materials testing firm is seeking an experienced Geotechnical/CMT Laboratory Manager to lead the day-to-day operation of its laboratory. This is an opportunity to take ownership of laboratory performance, strengthen quality procedures, develop the technical team, and support the continued growth of the local operation.
The position will oversee geotechnical and construction materials testing activities, ensuring that work is completed safely, accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable standards and accreditation requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the daily operation, scheduling, and workflow of the geotechnical and CMT laboratory
- Oversee testing of soils, concrete, aggregates, asphalt, and other construction materials
- Lead, train, mentor, and develop laboratory technicians
- Maintain laboratory quality-control procedures, documentation, and testing standards
- Support laboratory accreditations, audits, proficiency testing, and corrective actions
- Ensure equipment is properly calibrated, maintained, and available for testing requirements
- Monitor testing turnaround times, workload, utilisation, and overall laboratory efficiency
- Review test results and reports for accuracy, completeness, and compliance
- Coordinate closely with field technicians, project managers, engineers, and clients
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, certification, and performance management
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, expand testing capabilities, and increase laboratory capacity
- Support budgeting, purchasing, pricing, and overall operational performance
- Promote a strong culture of safety, accountability, technical quality, and customer service
Ideal Background
- Experience within a geotechnical or construction materials testing laboratory
- Previous laboratory management, supervisory, or senior technician experience
- Strong understanding of soil and construction materials testing procedures
- Familiarity with relevant ASTM, AASHTO, and industry testing standards
- Experience maintaining laboratory quality systems, accreditations, and audit readiness
- Proven ability to manage workloads, deadlines, equipment, and technical personnel
- Strong communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills
- Relevant laboratory and materials-testing certifications are highly desirable
- A degree in civil engineering, engineering technology, geology, construction materials, or a related discipline is beneficial but not essential
- Professional Engineer licensure is not required
