Medium Voltage Mechanical Design Engineer
Position Overview
A growing manufacturer of custom electrical power distribution and control equipment is seeking a Medium Voltage Mechanical Design Engineer to join its engineering team. This position is focused on the design and development of medium-voltage switchgear and related equipment, supporting projects from concept through manufacturing while working closely with engineering, production, supply chain, and quality teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical layouts, assemblies, and enclosures for medium-voltage switchgear systems.
- Create and maintain detailed 3D models and 2D engineering drawings using CAD software.
- Coordinate with electrical engineering teams to ensure proper system integration and equipment functionality.
- Provide hands-on support to manufacturing teams by resolving design, assembly, and fabrication challenges.
- Participate in product development initiatives, continuous improvement programs, and engineering innovation efforts.
- Ensure designs meet industry standards, customer specifications, and manufacturing requirements.
- Support drawing revisions, engineering documentation, bill of materials (BOM) releases, and revision control processes.
- Assist with troubleshooting mechanical and production issues while maintaining project schedules and deadlines.
- Collaborate across multiple departments to support successful project execution and product delivery.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience designing medium-voltage switchgear equipment.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar design platforms.
- Strong AutoCAD 2D drafting experience.
- Experience working within manufacturing-driven engineering environments.
- Familiarity with product data management (PDM) systems and ERP-integrated design processes.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Technical Experience Preferred
- Knowledge of medium-voltage switchgear construction and design principles.
- Understanding of IEEE standards related to medium-voltage switchgear equipment.
- Familiarity with UL requirements and compliance standards for medium-voltage products.
- Experience with metal-clad and metal-enclosed switchgear designs.
- Understanding of busbar design, grounding systems, safety interlocks, compartmentalization, and arc-resistant equipment concepts.
- Knowledge of insulation coordination, dielectric clearances, creepage distances, and fault-duty requirements for equipment up to 38kV.
- Experience supporting manufacturing, assembly, testing, and product implementation activities.
