Location: Phoenix, AZ

Position Summary

We are seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to support the development and deployment of control systems for electrical infrastructure and industrial automation projects. This position plays a key role in system design, software development, testing, commissioning, and customer support. The successful candidate will serve as a technical resource while working closely with engineering teams, field personnel, and end users to deliver reliable automation solutions.

This role offers a blend of office-based engineering, hands-on system validation, and occasional travel to support client installations and startup activities.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and configure PLC and HMI solutions for electrical and industrial automation applications.
  • Support factory testing, system verification, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and support project execution efforts.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to evaluate hardware selections and control system architecture.
  • Work directly with customers to understand requirements and resolve technical challenges.
  • Assist with system startup, integration, and field support throughout project execution.
  • Review control strategies and contribute to engineering standards and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining schedules and client expectations.
  • Travel periodically to project sites for testing, commissioning, and customer support.

Qualifications

Required

  • 7+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or related technical disciplines.
  • 3+ years of experience supporting field commissioning, startup, or customer-facing technical projects.
  • 2+ years of programming experience using Codesys.
  • Strong understanding of PLCs, HMIs, industrial networking, and control system integration.
  • Ability to troubleshoot automation hardware and software in both factory and field environments.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work directly with customers and project stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting power distribution, switchgear, electrical equipment, or critical infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with industrial manufacturing or process automation environments.
  • Experience with embedded devices, industrial computing platforms, or edge technologies.
  • Previous involvement with testing, validation, or commissioning of engineered systems.

Work Environment

  • Combination of office, production, testing, and field-based work.
  • Direct collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, and customer teams.
  • Occasional lifting of equipment and hardware as required.
  • Travel throughout the year to support project implementation, startup, and customer needs.

Compensation

Salary Range: $110,000 - $160,000+, depending on experience, technical expertise, and overall qualifications.
