Senior Civil Engineer - Urban Land Development
A respected multidisciplinary consulting firm is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to join its growing Detroit-based team. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a diverse portfolio of urban land development projects that are helping shape communities throughout Southeast Michigan.
Working alongside project managers, engineers, planners, and design professionals, you will play a key role in delivering civil/site engineering solutions for developers, architects, property owners, real estate professionals, and public-sector clients. The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing technical design tasks independently while collaborating closely with a broader project team.
The Opportunity
This role is ideal for an experienced civil engineer looking to take ownership of project design and coordination responsibilities while remaining actively involved in technical engineering work. You will support projects from initial concept through permitting, construction documentation, and construction administration.
Projects may include mixed-use developments, commercial sites, urban redevelopment, municipal improvements, residential developments, and other community-focused initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and develop site plans from concept through final design
- Perform site grading and earthwork design
- Design roadway geometrics and pavement sections
- Prepare stormwater management and drainage solutions
- Design utility systems including water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer infrastructure
- Develop soil erosion and sedimentation control plans
- Assist with green infrastructure and sustainable site development strategies
- Prepare construction details, specifications, and record drawings
- Coordinate permit applications and agency approvals
- Develop cost estimates and supporting project documentation
- Attend client, consultant, and regulatory meetings
- Conduct site visits and field investigations as required
- Support construction administration activities, including submittal reviews and contractor coordination
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary internal project teams to ensure successful project delivery
What They're Looking For
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
- Minimum of 5 years of professional civil engineering experience
- Strong background in civil/site design and land development projects
- Proficiency with AutoCAD
- Experience preparing grading, drainage, utility, and site development plans
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and prioritize workload effectively
- Experience working directly with clients, consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Michigan or actively pursuing licensure
- Experience using Civil 3D
- Previous involvement in urban redevelopment or complex land development projects
- Familiarity with permitting and entitlement processes throughout Michigan
Compensation
Base Salary: $100,000 - $140,000
Bonus: Annual performance-based bonus opportunity
