Senior Controls Design Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Controls Design Engineer to lead the design and implementation of Building Automation Systems (BAS), Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), and integrated controls solutions for complex commercial and critical facility projects.
This individual will serve as a technical leader responsible for developing control system designs, guiding engineering teams, coordinating with project stakeholders, and supporting projects from initial concept through construction and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
Controls Engineering & Design
- Lead the design of BAS, EPMS, DDC, and PLC-based control systems.
- Develop controls architectures, network layouts, and system integration strategies.
- Create sequences of operation, points lists, alarm definitions, and system diagrams.
- Specify controllers, instrumentation, sensors, actuators, valves, and field devices.
- Coordinate with equipment manufacturers, contractors, and project teams regarding system integration requirements.
- Support design documentation, specifications, and engineering deliverables.
- Collaborate with BIM, CAD, and Revit production teams.
Project Leadership
- Oversee controls engineering deliverables across multiple projects.
- Participate in design reviews, coordination meetings, and quality assurance processes.
- Review RFIs, technical submittals, and construction documentation.
- Support construction administration and commissioning activities.
- Serve as a primary technical resource for clients and project stakeholders.
Team Development
- Mentor junior engineers and designers.
- Provide technical guidance and support across project teams.
- Assist with workload planning, resource allocation, and project execution.
- Promote engineering best practices and design consistency.
Process Improvement
- Leverage digital and automation tools to improve engineering workflows.
- Support implementation of new technologies and industry best practices.
- Identify opportunities for increased efficiency and process standardization.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience with BAS, EPMS, or controls system design.
- Experience with DDC platforms, PLC-based controls, and system integration.
- Strong knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, SNMP, and related communication protocols.
- Understanding of IP networking, VLANs, switches, and routers.
- Experience with HVAC controls, facility automation, and energy management systems.
- Familiarity with Revit, BIM coordination, and engineering documentation.
- Strong client-facing communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a remote work environment.
Preferred Background
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Automation, or a related field.
- Experience supporting mission-critical, data center, healthcare, industrial, or large commercial facilities.
- Previous technical leadership or project lead experience.
- Experience mentoring engineers and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
