Company Overview
A leading provider of distributed energy and backup power solutions is seeking a Solutions / Applications Engineer to support the development of customer-focused power generation and microgrid solutions. The organization specializes in delivering reliable, cost-effective distributed generation systems that improve power resiliency, reduce operating costs, and support critical infrastructure.
Position Overview
The Solutions / Applications Engineer will serve as the technical lead for customer-facing power generation and microgrid projects, managing system architecture, technical scope, and solution development from initial client engagement through project handoff. This role combines technical expertise in electrical power systems with customer interaction, proposal development, and strategic solution design.
This is a highly consultative engineering position focused on technical leadership, customer engagement, and practical problem-solving rather than detailed design work alone.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of distributed generation and microgrid solutions, including system architecture, equipment sizing, and technical scope definition.
- Develop electrical system designs, single-line diagrams, layouts, and medium- and low-voltage system configurations.
- Perform power system evaluations related to load, capacity, and reliability.
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for customers, leading presentations, technical discussions, and solution workshops.
- Collaborate with engineering, EPC, product development, and operations teams to develop optimized solutions.
- Prepare technical proposal content, drawings, narratives, and supporting documentation.
- Evaluate design tradeoffs involving cost, performance, reliability, constructability, and schedule.
- Participate in customer meetings and site visits to validate project requirements and assumptions.
- Conduct technical reviews to ensure design quality and consistency.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of low- and medium-voltage power systems, generation equipment, and electrical distribution systems.
- Experience developing and interpreting electrical one-line diagrams and power system layouts.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally in a collaborative environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience in power systems, distributed generation, microgrids, or related industries.
- Experience performing power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, and reliability analyses.
- Familiarity with power system modeling software such as ETAP, PSCAD, PSS/E, or MATLAB/Simulink.
- Experience with switchgear, interconnection equipment, and electrical system layouts.
- Understanding of protection and control systems, relaying concepts, and coordination studies.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar design software.
- Experience supporting proposals, bids, and customer-facing engineering efforts.
- Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements, distributed energy resources (DER), and grid services.
Highlights
- Direct customer interaction and ownership of technical solutions.
- Exposure to the full project lifecycle from concept and proposal through execution.
- Opportunity to work on mission-critical power generation and energy infrastructure projects.
- Strong career growth potential across technical, commercial, and leadership tracks.
- Hybrid work environment with preference for candidates located in the Houston area.
