TAMPA - Traffic ITS Design Engineer, PE
Position Overview
We are seeking a Traffic & Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Engineer to support the planning, design, and delivery of transportation infrastructure projects. This role will be responsible for developing traffic engineering and ITS solutions, preparing construction documents, supporting project pursuits, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver successful projects for state and local agencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop traffic engineering designs for roadway lighting, traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, maintenance of traffic, and related transportation infrastructure improvements.
- Prepare ITS designs for projects involving fiber optic communication systems, signal interconnects, traffic monitoring equipment, detection devices, dynamic message signs, and other intelligent transportation technologies.
- Support all phases of project development from concept and preliminary design through final plans, specifications, and construction documentation.
- Evaluate and implement emerging ITS technologies and assist with systems engineering, verification, testing, and deployment activities.
- Prepare engineer's estimates, technical specifications, and bid-ready design packages for public infrastructure projects.
- Conduct quality control reviews of plans, calculations, specifications, and cost estimates to ensure compliance with project requirements and agency standards.
- Perform traffic operational analyses, traffic signal evaluations, warrant studies, and intersection control assessments.
- Apply FDOT, municipal, county, and other applicable design criteria to ensure technically sound and compliant project deliverables.
- Assist with proposal preparation, scope development, fee estimates, and project budgeting.
- Coordinate with clients, project managers, and internal teams throughout project execution.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineering staff.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in traffic engineering and/or ITS design.
- Proficiency with MicroStation, SignCAD, and related transportation design software.
- Strong understanding of Florida transportation design standards, manuals, and FDOT requirements.
- Experience with traffic operations, signal timing, phasing, and controller functionality.
- Working knowledge of industry software such as Synchro, SimTraffic, VISSIM, and Highway Capacity Manual methodologies.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments while maintaining a high level of technical accuracy.
- Experience leading tasks, coordinating project efforts, and mentoring junior staff is preferred.
Preferred Experience
- FDOT traffic and ITS design experience.
- Background supporting roadway, traffic operations, and smart mobility projects.
- Experience preparing plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) packages for public agencies.
- Familiarity with innovative transportation technologies and connected infrastructure solutions.
