Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer - Water/Wastewater

Overview:
A growing engineering consultancy is looking to hire an experienced Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer to support the delivery of projects across the water and wastewater sector. This role offers the opportunity to work on critical infrastructure projects, designing and implementing advanced control systems that optimise treatment processes, improve reliability, and enhance operational efficiency.

You'll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver full lifecycle solutions-from design through to commissioning-across municipal and industrial facilities.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop PLC/SCADA-based control systems for water and wastewater treatment facilities
  • Produce control system architecture, network layouts, and I/O lists
  • Develop P&IDs, control narratives, and functional design specifications (FDS)
  • Specify instrumentation, including flow, level, pressure, and analytical devices
  • Support electrical design elements, including panel layouts, MCC interfaces, and field wiring requirements
  • Configure and program PLCs (e.g. Allen Bradley, Siemens, Schneider) and develop HMI/SCADA applications
  • Perform FAT/SAT testing and participate in system commissioning and start-up activities
  • Provide technical support to clients and assist with troubleshooting and optimisation of existing systems
  • Collaborate with process, mechanical, and electrical teams to ensure integrated system delivery

Requirements:

  • 5+ years' experience in I&C or Automation Engineering, ideally within water/wastewater
  • Strong experience with PLC programming and SCADA/HMI development
  • Understanding of industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.)
  • Experience with instrumentation specification and field integration
  • Knowledge of electrical systems including MCCs and control panels is advantageous
  • Ability to develop technical documentation (FDS, SDS, I/O lists, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a client-facing environment
  • Willingness to travel to project sites for commissioning activities
