Substation Protection Lead Engineer
About the Opportunity
A growing engineering consulting firm is seeking a Lead Protection & Control Engineer to support its Substation Protection & Control team.
This role requires hands-on experience delivering protection and control design projects for electric utilities, spanning voltage levels from 4kV through 345kV. The position is client-facing and involves cross-disciplinary coordination across engineering teams. Strong project leadership, communication skills, and the ability to meet deadlines are critical. The ideal candidate is collaborative, proactive, and capable of building client confidence.
Key Technical Responsibilities
- Develop and review one-line and three-line diagrams
- Create AC and DC schematic designs
- Design and integrate SCADA and RTU systems
- Produce panel layouts and wiring diagrams
- Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Coordinate with civil, structural, and substation engineering teams
- Support protection schemes (relay settings experience is a plus)
Project & Leadership Responsibilities
- Act as Project Engineering Lead on assigned projects
- Provide mentorship and guidance to engineering and design staff
- Maintain consistency with internal and industry design standards
- Perform QA/QC reviews of deliverables
- Support projects from scoping through design, construction, and closeout
- Provide construction and field support as needed
- Maintain strong client relationships and customer focus
- Communicate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- Candidates with FE/EIT actively pursuing licensure may be considered
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in the electric utility industry
- Experience with substation protection and control design packages
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
