Commercial Plumbing Estimator (Mechanical)

Overview

A well‑established and rapidly growing commercial plumbing contractor is seeking a Commercial Plumbing Estimator to join their team. This role is ideal for an experienced plumbing or mechanical estimator who enjoys autonomy, collaboration, and being part of a tight‑knit culture with strong trust from leadership.

The company has a strong backlog across diverse commercial projects, including higher education, stadium work, and large‑scale institutional developments. With consistent annual growth and long‑term expansion plans, this is an opportunity to step into a business where your contribution is valued and where there is room for long‑term career progression.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform full takeoffs from drawings and specifications for commercial plumbing projects.
  • Develop accurate cost estimates, budgets, and proposals.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers and leadership during preconstruction.
  • Participate in a structured interview and review process involving technical, cultural, and soft‑skills alignment.
  • Support pricing and estimation for both new projects and ongoing client needs.
  • Work with field teams when needed to ensure accurate pricing and feasibility.
  • Contribute to growing the estimating function as the business scales over the next 5+ years.
  • Provide clear documentation, detail, and justification behind all estimates.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of estimating experience in commercial plumbing (mechanical estimating experience also acceptable).
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing systems, materials, and commercial construction methods.
  • Ability to read blueprints and complete detailed takeoffs.
  • Experience working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong drive, ambition, and initiative - the team values individuals who are hungry to grow, not just punch a clock.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Professional references required.

Preferred Background

  • Experience with both plumbing‑only contractors and mechanical/plumbing hybrid contractors.
  • Exposure to commercial, institutional, higher‑education, or large‑scale projects.
  • Experience at non‑union plumbing/mechanical contractors is a plus (though not required).

Culture & Work Environment

  • Tight‑knit, family‑oriented, second‑generation business with a strong emphasis on trust.
  • "Work hard, play hard" team environment with lots of collaboration and support.
  • Leadership values autonomy - no micromanagement.
  • Employees are encouraged to enjoy life, not just work.
  • High transparency and communication between staff and ownership.
  • Low turnover: they want someone who is committed long‑term and eager to grow.

Career Progression

  • Potential to grow into Preconstruction Manager or other leadership roles.
  • Opportunities to expand skill set across estimating, project planning, and commercial operations.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: Approx. $100,000 (up to ~15% flexibility depending on fit).
  • PTO: 3 weeks starting, plus 6 standard holidays, Christmas Eve, and the day after Thanksgiving.
  • Health Insurance included (with dental/vision options depending on plan).
  • Bonus program (not guaranteed; performance‑based and discretionary).
  • Vehicle allowance available.
  • Flexible work environment focused on results, not rigid hours.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

  • Growing from ~12 employees last year to ~15 this year, with a goal of 26 by 2030.
  • Strong recurring backlog and a diverse project portfolio.
  • Company recently hired a PM and continues expanding its office and field operations.
  • Leadership has decades of mechanical and plumbing experience and is committed to developing staff.
  • A stable, family‑owned environment offering more personal connection than large corporate competitors.
