Summary

The Data Center Whitespace Manager is responsible for overseeing installation, operations, and maintenance of IT and network infrastructure within the data center's white space. This role involves planning and executing projects to ensure optimal use of space, power, and cooling while adhering to strict safety and operational standards. The ideal candidate will have a blend of operational and management experience related to server and network hardware, structured cabling, and data center best practices.


Key Responsibilities

  • Customer Focus: Engage with internal stakeholders to understand data center requirements and provide solutions aligned with operational goals and growth strategies.
  • Infrastructure Management: Manage physical installation and decommissioning of servers, storage, and networking equipment in racks and cabinets.
  • Whitespace Planning: Design and optimize physical layout, including rack layouts, aisle containment (hot/cold), and power distribution for efficiency and scalability.
  • Cabling & Connectivity: Implement and troubleshoot structured cabling solutions (fiber optic and copper) between network devices, servers, and patch panels.
  • Capacity Management: Monitor and report on space, power, and cooling utilization to prevent overloads and ensure future growth.
  • Hardware & Logistics: Manage inventory, tracking, and asset management of hardware components within the white space.
  • Incident Response: Respond to and resolve physical infrastructure issues, including hardware failures, power outages, and connectivity problems.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation, including rack elevation diagrams, cable run sheets, and equipment inventories.
  • Vendor Coordination: Collaborate with external vendors and contractors for hardware deliveries, installations, maintenance, and break/fix.
  • Ticket Management: Utilize tools such as JIRA, ServiceNow, or similar platforms to manage workflows and service requests.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Experience: 8+ years in data center operations, ideally with management experience.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Networking: Strong understanding of Layer 1 networking, structured cabling standards (TIA), fiber types (OM3, OS2), and copper cabling (Cat6).
    • DCIM Tools: Experience with Nlyte or similar, PDU configuration tools, sensors, CLI interfaces, SQL or database experience.
    • Hardware: Skilled in racking, stacking, and installing servers, storage, and networking hardware.
    • Data Center Operations: Familiarity with PDUs, UPS systems, and cooling infrastructure.
  • Certifications: ITIL, CDCP, CDCMP, CompTIA Network+, Server+ are a plus.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift moderately heavy equipment, work at heights, and operate in noisy environments with proper PPE.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Problem-Solving: Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
    • Attention to Detail: Meticulous documentation and organizational skills.
    • Teamwork: Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
    • Leadership: Experience managing technical teams in a data center environment.
