Director of Sales (Industrial Automation)
Position Summary
The Director of Sales - Automation leads a dynamic team focused on driving growth in industrial automation and control systems. This role combines strategic planning, market development, and hands-on sales execution across technologies such as PLCs, VFDs, servos, robotics, visualization, and safety systems. The director is accountable for both personal and team performance in expanding market presence and revenue.
Primary Responsibilities
Market Development: Analyze industry trends, identify growth opportunities, and guide research into target sectors for automation solutions
Sales Leadership: Design and implement sales strategies to penetrate key markets, attract new clients, and increase share
Client Engagement: Build strong relationships with industrial and commercial customers, understand their needs, and influence decision-makers
Promotion & Outreach: Coordinate with marketing to develop campaigns, leverage trade shows and digital platforms to highlight offerings
Proposal Management: Oversee quoting processes from initial inquiry to post-sale support, ensuring accurate scope and pricing
Contract Negotiation: Lead contract discussions, secure favorable terms, and resolve issues during the sales cycle
Team Development: Mentor and manage inside and outside sales professionals, fostering a high-performance culture
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Align sales efforts with engineering, product development, and marketing teams
Performance Tracking: Monitor KPIs, manage forecasts and pipelines, and refine strategies using CRM tools
Industry Presence: Represent the organization at events to build visibility and expand professional networks
Qualifications
Required
8+ years in industrial automation sales
3+ years in a leadership capacity
Deep understanding of automation technologies (PLCs, VFDs, servos, robotics, etc.)
Proven success in B2B sales environments
Strong communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or equivalent industry experience
Preferred
Experience with OEMs, integrators, and industrial clients
Familiarity with major automation platforms (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens, ABB)
Established network in manufacturing and automation sectors
Additional Details
Domestic travel required: 30-40%
