Job Title: Principal/Senior Power Systems Engineer - Grid Connections & Renewables
Location: Sydney, NSW (Hybrid / Office‑based)
About the Opportunity
A specialist engineering consultancy supporting renewable energy and power generation projects across Australia's National Electricity Market (NEM) is expanding its power systems team. Multiple opportunities are available for Power Systems Engineers at various levels, including a Principal role with people‑leadership responsibility.
This is an opportunity to work closely with developers, network service providers and OEMs on complex grid connection and power system studies, contributing to some of Australia's most active renewable and energy transition projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver early‑stage network feasibility and connection assessments for generation and renewable energy projects.
- Prepare and support Chapter 5 and Chapter 5A grid connection applications, including technical documentation and modelling outputs.
- Undertake power system studies in line with NER and NSP requirements, including:
- Load flow and steady‑state analysis
- Dynamic and transient studies
- Power quality and harmonic assessments
- Model validation and compliance support
- Develop and review modelling using industry‑standard tools such as PSS®E, PSCAD, PowerFactory and SINCAL.
- Support the definition, negotiation and agreement of performance and connection standards with NSPs and AEMO.
- Act as a technical interface with AEMO, TNSPs, DNSPs, inverter OEMs and project stakeholders throughout the connection process.
- Provide technical input into substation, grid connection and generator system design across solar, wind and other technologies.
- For senior roles: mentor junior engineers, provide technical leadership, and contribute to project and team management.
About You
- Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (postgraduate qualifications highly regarded).
- 2-5+ years' experience working on renewable energy or power generation projects within Australia.
- Practical experience in generator connection studies within the NEM.
- Strong capability in PSS®E and PSCAD; experience with PowerFactory and/or SINCAL highly valued.
- Understanding of AEMO, TNSP and DNSP connection frameworks, including regulatory and compliance requirements.
- Exposure to power quality, harmonics, and steady‑state analysis is advantageous.
- Experience using Python or similar scripting for automation or model management is desirable.
- Confident communicator able to engage with technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Self‑driven, organised, and comfortable working across multiple projects and deadlines.
- For Senior / Principal candidates: experience leading projects and guiding engineers is strongly preferred.
