Senior Engineer - P&C/Relay
We're looking for a lead-level Protection & Control engineer with a strong background in relay protection, automation, and SEL relay programming. This is a remote role, but does require monthly travel to Chicago.
If you're someone who thrives in technically complex environments and enjoys working across multiple projects-from design and testing to commissioning and mentoring-this could be a perfect fit.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and contribute to the design, execution, and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of complex protection and control schemes for medium-voltage power systems using microprocessor-based IEDs and automation controllers.
- Develop, test, and support commissioning of distribution automation and source transfer applications for utility and commercial/industrial clients.
- Provide detailed cost estimates and technical input during proposal development.
- Support field service teams during complex commissioning activities and offer post-commissioning technical support.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and communication protocols (e.g., DNP 3.0, IEC 61850).
- Create and deliver training materials for internal teams and external clients.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and apply them to ongoing projects.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to their technical development.
- Develop and refine standard work practices to improve design efficiency and consistency.
- Promote and model safe working practices, especially in site-based environments.
- Collaborate across departments to ensure alignment and smooth execution of shared initiatives.
- Provide regular project updates and reports to leadership and stakeholders.
- Participate in additional engineering projects and initiatives as needed.
- Adhere to all applicable company policies and procedures.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in electric transmission and distribution systems, with a focus on automation and P&C systems.
- Strong knowledge of protection schemes, relay logic/programming, and automation engineering.
- Proficiency in communication protocols such as DNP 3.0 and IEC 61850.
- Familiarity with industry standards (IEEE, IEC, NFPA).
- Experience with Oracle and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Comfortable working around de-energized medium-voltage switch-gear and following site safety protocols.
- Strong analytically and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to present to diverse audiences and influence outcomes.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Proven leadership and mentoring capabilities.
- Self-motivated with a commitment to ongoing technical development.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
