We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Tunnel Engineer to join our team in Washington, DC. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to major underground infrastructure projects across North America, with a focus on transportation and water/wastewater sectors.
About the Role
As a Senior Tunnel Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of complex tunneling projects, oversee geotechnical investigations, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative engineering solutions. You will play a key role in shaping underground infrastructure while mentoring junior staff and engaging directly with clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support the delivery of tunneling and underground infrastructure projects in the U.S. and Canada.
- Oversee field investigation programs and manage data collection for design and condition assessments.
- Conduct detailed geotechnical and structural analyses for tunnels and underground structures.
- Develop and evaluate field instrumentation programs.
- Manage teams producing design solutions, technical reports, specifications, and drawings.
- Prepare high-quality technical documentation, including design memoranda and client reports.
- Liaise directly with clients, attend meetings, and respond to technical queries.
- Contribute to and prepare proposals for new projects.
- Independently plan and manage design programs and multidisciplinary teams.
- Mentor junior and graduate engineers, supporting their technical development.
Candidate Profile
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering (Master's preferred).
- Licensing: Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
- Experience: 10+ years in engineering consultancy (excluding education).
- Technical Skills:
- Proficient in structural software such as STRAND7, SAP2000, STAAD, or equivalent.
- Skilled in geotechnical software including Plaxis, GeoStudio (Slide), Rocscience suite, and data management tools (GINT/Holebase).
- Familiarity with BIM tools (Bentley/Autodesk) is a plus.
- Design Expertise: Demonstrated experience in geotechnical design, ground characterization, and foundation systems.
- Sector Experience: Transportation and water/wastewater sector experience is an asset.
- Certifications: NCTI certification is preferred.
- Soft Skills: Strong communication skills and proven ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
- References: Strong professional references from previous managers or clients.
