A well‑established civil and structural engineering firm is seeking an experienced and motivated Structural Engineering Department Manager to lead their growing structural team in Kansas City, MO. Key Responsibilities
This individual will lead the structural engineering department, providing technical oversight, project leadership, and team development. The incumbent will manage structural engineering efforts from concept through construction, support resource planning, and serve as a key client-facing representative of the firm.
Leadership & Team Development
- Mentor and inspire a team of structural engineers
- Foster a culture of collaboration, quality, and continuous improvement
- Conduct performance evaluations and drive professional development initiatives
Project & Technical Oversight
- Oversee structural design across infrastructure, water, energy, aviation, and commercial projects
- Review and approve structural analyses, calculations, models, and design deliverables
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and best practices
- Drive innovation and support implementation of new technologies and tools
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients and project partners
- Participate in meetings, presentations, proposals, and negotiations
- Ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and exceeding client expectations
Department Operations & Resource Management
- Manage workload balancing, scheduling, and team resource allocation
- Oversee departmental budgeting and project financial performance
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency
What They're Looking For
The ideal candidate is a seasoned structural engineer with strong leadership skills, technical expertise, and a passion for guiding teams and delivering exceptional work.
- BS or MS in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) required; advanced certifications (LEED, ENV SP, PMP) a plus
- 10+ years of structural engineering experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role
- Proficiency with software such as SAP2000, ETABS, RISA, AutoCAD, Revit, Enercalc, TEDDs
- Experience with infrastructure and/or commercial structural systems
- Strong communication, mentoring, and client‑relations skills
- Proven ability to manage complex, multi‑disciplinary projects
