Substation & Relay Technician

Job Summary:

This role involves skilled technical work in the installation, testing, calibration, maintenance, and repair of protective relaying, control, and metering equipment used in electrical substations and power systems. The position ensures the reliable and safe operation of transmission and distribution systems through proper protection and control practices. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining substation equipment such as current converters, voltage transformers, and circuit breakers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assemble, maintain, and operate devices and machines used in electrical substations, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Perform testing, troubleshooting, and repair of substation equipment, voltage regulators, circuit breakers, and transformers.
  • Install, test, calibrate, and maintain protective relays, control systems, and associated equipment.
  • Conduct functional tests of protection schemes for transformers, circuit breakers, and transmission lines.
  • Verify SCADA, RTU, and communication interfaces between relays and control systems.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of test results, relay settings, and maintenance activities.
  • Perform NERC/PRC-mandated relay testing and verification.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and one-line drawings.
  • Support commissioning and energization of new or modified substations and relay panels.
  • Communicate with dispatch for switching instructions and perform switching operations.
  • Conduct inspections, respond to alarms, and perform emergency repairs.
  • Utilize test equipment such as Omicron, Doble, or Megger sets.
  • Adhere to all safety and clearance procedures, including OSHA compliance.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for system protection support.

Requirements:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience: 10+ years in substation and relay work.
  • Licenses: Commercial Driver's License Class B with airbrake endorsement.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varied outdoor conditions.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical schematics and relay systems.

Work Environment:

Exposure to outdoor weather, high-voltage equipment, and emergency response duties. Must comply with all safety protocols and participate in emergency management operations when required.
