Telecommunications Engineer 3
Role Overview:
This position focuses on the planning and development of telecommunications infrastructure for mid- to large-scale projects. The individual in this role will be responsible for designing and coordinating structured cabling systems, both inside and outside plant, and will be involved throughout the full project lifecycle-from concept through construction support.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and coordinate pathways and cabling layouts for telecom systems, including creating floor plans, telecom room layouts, and labeling documentation.
- Develop technical specifications for materials, installation, and testing procedures.
- Use AutoCAD or Revit to produce detailed design drawings aligned with project requirements.
- Determine and document outlet types, configurations, and placement.
- Collaborate with other disciplines to integrate telecom infrastructure with systems such as security, AV, fire alarm, wireless networks, and building automation.
- Generate and manage cable schedules and pathway fill calculations.
- Draft and maintain project specifications and respond to RFIs.
- Support proposal efforts with quantity takeoffs and documentation.
- Assist in developing compliance matrices and other project tracking tools.
- Participate in quality control processes and site observations, producing reports as needed.
- Learn and contribute to the design of active systems like public address, nurse call, DAS, and emergency communication systems.
- Prepare documentation and procedures for pre-installation testing and commissioning.
- Apply relevant industry codes and standards, including NFPA, TIA, and BICSI guidelines.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of recent experience in telecom infrastructure, or a Master's with 3+ years, or a PhD with relevant coursework.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn new technologies and systems as needed.
- Familiarity with TIA standards and NFPA codes.
- Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check.
- Commitment to earning the BICSI RCDD certification within the first year of employment.
Preferred Experience:
- Holding a BICSI RCDD credential.
- Proficiency in CAD or BIM tools, especially Revit.
- Understanding of active communication systems (e.g., PA, DAS, WLAN).
- Manufacturer certifications and hands-on installation/testing experience are advantageous.
Physical & Cognitive Requirements:
- Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity for tasks such as typing and drawing.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interpret and apply technical information and solve problems logically.
