Transportation Practice Leader
Overview:
The Transportation Practice Leader is a senior-level role responsible for launching, leading, and growing a transportation engineering division within a civil engineering firm. This position combines technical expertise, business development, team leadership, and strategic planning to deliver impactful infrastructure solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership
Lead the design and delivery of transportation infrastructure projects (roadways, intersections, pedestrian facilities).
Ensure compliance with standards such as AASHTO, MUTCD, FHWA, and local regulations.
Oversee quality assurance and control across transportation projects.
Business Development
Identify and pursue new project opportunities and clients.
Develop proposals, scopes of work, and budgets.
Represent the firm at industry events and conferences.
Team & Practice Building
Recruit, mentor, and manage engineering staff.
Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture.
Establish and grow the transportation division within the firm.
Client Engagement
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, agencies, and stakeholders.
Serve as the primary point of contact for transportation-related projects.
Strategic Planning & Financial Oversight
Develop and execute growth strategies for the transportation practice.
Prepare annual budgets and monitor financial performance.
Collaborate with executive leadership on business planning.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (Master's preferred).
Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
10+ years of experience in transportation engineering.
Proven track record in project delivery and business development.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil3D, OpenRoads Designer.
Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Preferred Experience:
Familiarity with MnDOT or other state DOT standards.
Experience with both design-bid-build and alternative delivery methods (e.g., Design-Build).
Knowledge of regional transportation planning and mobility trends.
