Job Summary
The CFD Engineer Specialist will collaborate with senior design staff to enhance their expertise in CFD for data center design and construction. As part of the Engineering Team, this individual will work closely with the Project Management Team to create construction documents, develop and edit project specifications, and assist in construction administration.
Operating with minimal daily direction and general guidance on new projects, the CFD Engineer Specialist will handle complex projects independently or with limited supervision. They will ensure their work aligns with organizational goals, values, and departmental objectives.
Essential Functions
Pre-Simulation Planning (30%)
- Collaborate with design teams to refine simulation objectives and understand project requirements.
- Participate in discussions to define simulation prerequisites, gather necessary data, and establish accurate initial conditions.
- Identify challenges and recommend adjustments to design parameters or simulation setups to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Guide and Direct CFD Simulation and Analysis Activities (30%)
- Perform advanced CFD simulations and analyses independently.
- Conduct complex flow, heat transfer, and turbulence modeling tasks.
- Execute intermediate computational analysis for complex projects, components, and systems.
- Analyze simulation results to validate designs.
- Use data center-specific CFD software like 6SigmaRoom by Future Facilities / Cadence or equivalents such as TileFlow, CoolSim, Autodesk CFD.
- Utilize general CFD software like Star CCM+ for building/wind analysis or HVAC equipment manufacturing.
- Review and prepare detailed simulation reports.
- Develop and review boundary conditions and meshing strategies.
- Assist in developing proposals, including simulation scope, schedule, and budget.
- Conduct technical discussions with clients, present findings, interpret results, and provide insights.
- Manage simulation tasks effectively, including resource forecasting and coordination.
- Identify deviations from expected results and develop strategies to address them.
- Perform QAQC peer reviews for simulations not led by them.
Guide and Direct Validation and Testing Activities (30%)
- Conduct rigorous validation of CFD results using advanced analytical techniques to ensure accuracy and real-world reflection.
- Collaborate with experimental teams to validate CFD results.
- Prepare validation reports comparing CFD results with experimental data.
- Work closely with the CFD, experimental, and project management teams.
- Address technical queries related to simulations.
- Complete validation checklists and documentation.
- Approve modifications based on validation findings.
Reporting (10%)
- Prepare project progress reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Update and maintain shop drawing and RFI log.
- Manage personal hours using company tools.
Completion of Assigned Tasks and Deliverables on Time and on Budget
Performs Other Related Duties as Assigned
Requirements
Position Requirements (Intermediate Level for All the Following)
- Knowledge of fluid mechanics principles, including boundary layers, laminar flows, and basic heat transfer.
- Understanding of core numerical methods in CFD, like finite volume and element methods.
- Familiarity with primary turbulence models and their applications.
- Proficiency in using CFD software for simulations and reviewing drawings with AutoCAD/Revit.
- Expertise in data center-specific CFD software, especially 6Sigma by Future Facilities / Cadence or its equivalents.
- Extensive experience with Star CCM+ across various physics types and applications, focusing on external CFD modeling of data centers.
- Skilled in 3D modeling, cleaning, and preparing complex CAD for CFD modeling.
- Proficiency in JAVA or Python scripting, and comfortable with Linux and HPC systems preferred.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams) with exceptional organizational skills for file management.
- Accuracy and attention to detail in completing assignments.
- Ability to work successfully in a remote environment through effective communication, self-motivation, proactiveness, and resourcefulness.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to interpret results.
- Adherence to company and site safety requirements.
- Ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports, and correspondence.
